Restaurant Wall Mural Installation with Spot Varnish
This restaurant wall graphic combined a large paneled vinyl mural with selective spot varnish, giving specific parts of the artwork a different finish instead of treating the entire wall the same.
The finished graphic measured roughly 246 inches wide by 150 inches tall and was produced on 6 mil adhesive backed vinyl. The project was printed on our EFI Pro 30h+ with the clear spot effect concentrated in selected details, including the smaller gold circles visible throughout the finished restaurant interior.

What spot varnish actually does on a wall graphic
Spot varnish is a clear printed layer placed only over selected parts of the artwork. Instead of adding the same finish across the entire mural, specific shapes or details can be given a different surface appearance so they react differently to light.
A controlled change in sheen
On this project, the effect is easiest to notice in the smaller gold circle details. As the viewing angle and room lighting change, those selected areas catch light differently from the surrounding printed surface.
The clear layer does not turn ordinary printed ink into metallic ink. What creates the effect is the contrast between the treated and untreated portions of the artwork.
Why selective finishing matters
Large restaurant murals already create scale. A spot finish adds another layer without making every part of the wall equally reflective or visually busy.
That makes it useful when a designer wants certain shapes, logos, patterns, or graphic elements to become more noticeable only when someone moves through the space.
Spot varnish is less about making the entire mural glossy and more about deciding where light should become part of the design. On a large hospitality wall, that can add subtle depth while keeping the overall environment clean and controlled.
More than printing one large sheet of vinyl
A mural of this scale has to be treated as a production and installation system. The artwork, bleed, panel layout, print settings, finishing, wall conditions, and final placement all have to agree before installation begins.
Large format wall printing
The mural was produced on adhesive backed 6 mil vinyl at a finished size of approximately 246 by 150 inches, with additional artwork area included for bleed.

Selected portions of the artwork received the clear spot treatment rather than applying the effect over the entire image. That gave the design another visual layer while keeping the larger surface controlled.

The printed mural was paneled so a very large graphic could be positioned and installed cleanly on the actual restaurant wall instead of being treated like an oversized decal.
View installation supportWhat has to happen before a restaurant mural reaches the wall
The visible part is the installation. Most of the work that protects the finished result happens before anyone starts applying vinyl.
Final dimensions need to reflect the actual installation area, including enough production bleed to give the installer room to work at the edges.
The file has to be scaled correctly and important design elements need to stay away from trim areas, seams, corners, and other installation risk points.
A proof gives the customer and production team one final view of sizing, artwork placement, and critical boundaries before output begins.
Large murals are divided into manageable sections so graphics can be handled, aligned, and installed consistently across a much larger wall.
Color output and selected clear areas have to stay registered to the artwork so the spot effect lands where the design intended.
Panels are placed in sequence and checked against the surrounding space so the finished mural reads as one continuous environment.
Most problems start before installation day
Restaurant wall graphics are highly visible and often tied to remodels, openings, photography, or guest schedules. Catching production issues early is much easier than correcting a finished mural on site.
The wall size changes after artwork is built
Even a small field change can affect scale, cropping, bleed, and the position of important artwork. Updated dimensions should be reflected in the production proof before printing.
Critical artwork lands too close to an edge
Logos, lettering, faces, patterns, and other important details need enough breathing room so normal installation trimming does not compromise the design.
The wall condition is discovered too late
Paint condition, texture, dust, repairs, moisture, and recently painted surfaces can change how wall vinyl behaves. Surface review should happen before production whenever possible.
Special effects are treated like ordinary color
Spot varnish depends on designated artwork areas. Those areas need to be planned during file preparation so the clear effect is deliberate rather than an afterthought.
Planning a restaurant wall mural
A few practical decisions early in the project can prevent most of the expensive corrections later.
Send photos with the measurements
Wall dimensions are more useful when production can also see corners, outlets, doors, trim, equipment, furniture, and other conditions around the installation area.
Build in real bleed
Walls are rarely as perfect as the artboard. Extra image area gives the installer room to finish edges cleanly without stretching the design to compensate.
Proof the full composition
Review more than spelling and color. Check how the design relates to the actual wall dimensions and where important visual elements land.
Plan specialty effects before output
If spot varnish or another selective effect is part of the design, identify those elements during file preparation so production can build the effect into the print correctly.
Restaurant wall mural FAQs
Short answers to the questions that usually come up when a hospitality team is planning a large interior graphic.
What is spot varnish on a printed wall mural?
Spot varnish is a clear printed effect applied only to selected areas of the artwork. Those areas catch light differently from the surrounding print, creating a controlled change in sheen and visual depth.
Does spot varnish make printed gold look metallic?
Not by itself. Clear ink does not add metallic particles, but placing it over selected gold colored artwork can make those details react differently to light and appear more pronounced from certain viewing angles.
Can spot varnish be used on only part of a graphic?
Yes. That is the point of a spot treatment. Specific shapes, logos, patterns, lettering, or other artwork elements can receive the clear effect while the rest of the graphic remains untreated.
Why are large wall murals printed in panels?
Paneling turns a very large mural into sections that can be printed, handled, aligned, and installed accurately. When the file and installation plan are prepared correctly, the panels work together as one finished composition.
Do restaurant walls need to be prepared before vinyl installation?
Yes. The wall should be clean, sound, dry, and appropriate for the selected adhesive. Heavy texture, damaged paint, dust, moisture, or recently painted surfaces can create adhesion problems and should be reviewed before production.
