Barbara Lawton, President of Lawton 1984 to 2016, The Standard Behind Everything We Do Today

Some people leave behind a business. Others leave behind a standard. Barbara Lawton did both.

At a time when women-led businesses were far less common, Barbara helped lead one with confidence, clarity, and conviction. She was a co-founder of Lawton and served as President from 1984 to 2016, building a standard that still shapes the company today.

For those who worked alongside her, that standard showed up in the smallest details. Not in speeches or big moments, but in how things were done every single day.

Greg Howard (Co-Founder, President & CEO) “Barbara always had a very strong work ethic. Understand your job or task and be diligent in completing it thoroughly.”

That work ethic shaped the culture. But so did the way people experienced her leadership day to day.

Jennifer (Office Manager) “Even as a little kid, I always saw her as an owner. As a boss. That presence was always there.”
“I never really dreamed about weddings or white picket fences. I was always drawn to Grandma Lawton’s lifestyle.”

That presence wasn’t loud. It was steady. It came from how she carried herself and what she expected from the people around her.

Carmen (Accounting) “She would always say, this is Carmen… we couldn’t do this without her. She is my right hand.”

She didn’t have to say that. But she did. And people remembered it.

Randy Watterson (General Manager) “If I couldn’t explain it clearly enough to present it to Barbara, then it wasn’t ready.”

It wasn’t about dressing ideas up. It was about clarity. That expectation raised the level of thinking across the company.
